Welcome to Maungaraki School: Our HEART Values
At Maungaraki School, our culture is anchored by our HEART values. These aren't just words on a wall, they are a progression of skills and mindsets that grow with our students as they journey from being a Kākano (seed) to a Fern.
By embedding these values into our daily life, we ensure our kura is a place where every learner feels safe, seen, and supported to reach their full potential.
H - Hauora
Hauora is the foundation of a healthy learner, encompassing mental, physical, social, and spiritual well-being. Identity: Students develop a strong sense of who they are, where they belong, and what is important to them and their families.
Self-Care: From knowing what their body needs to identifying complex emotions and knowing how to "fill their bucket," students learn to advocate for themselves.
Building Culture: By acknowledging diversity and understanding where their beliefs fit within the community, students learn to respect others' values.
E – Engaged
Being engaged means being an active participant in one's own journey, moving from completing basic tasks to becoming a self-motivated, independent learner.
Goal Setting: Students learn to set SMART goals, articulate their next learning steps, and identify the resources needed to achieve them.
Passion: We encourage students to bring passion to their roles, stay focused on the task at hand, and find ways to get more out of their time.
Building Culture: When students are engaged, they take pride in their work and contribute positively to the classroom energy.
A – Active
An active learner is a brave learner. This value covers both physical vitality and a "can-do" attitude toward challenges.
Perseverance: We teach our students to "give things a go," persist through difficulties, and pursue excellence in their interests.
Risk-Taking: Students are encouraged to step out of their comfort zones, take risks in their learning, and see physical activity as a fun, normal part of life.
Building Culture: This fosters a resilient community where students participate with a positive mindset and reflect on how to reach their full potential.
R – Relationships
Relationships are the glue of our kura. We focus on how our words and actions impact those around us.
Building Culture: By practicing gratitude, tolerance, and manners, our students build a safe, kind environment where everyone feels they can join in.
Empathy: Students learn to read social cues and body language, use kind words, and see things from another person's point of view.
Regulation: We prioritize the ability to understand and regulate emotions, manage friendships, and resolve conflicts effectively.
T – Teamwork
Teamwork prepares our students for the wider world by teaching them the value of collective success.
Collaboration: Students learn to share ideas, work with a diverse range of peers, and fulfill various roles within a group.
Leadership: We view leadership as a responsibility to do the right thing (integrity) and as an opportunity to support and encourage others.
Building Culture: We move from "equality" to "equity," helping students understand that fair play means making appropriate adjustments so everyone can succeed.
