Maungaraki School welcomes children from over 15 different nationalities. Most of these children are in New Zealand permanently or are here with parents who are working in the area.
At any time we would only ever have a small number of International fee-paying students who come to New Zealand to study and to develop their skills in English. They spend part of their week with a specialist English teacher but most of their time is spent in the classroom with children their same age.
International fee-paying children must be at least 10 years of age unless they are living with their parents. Maungaraki School does not arrange accommodation for International Students but is required to inspect all accommodation as part of the "Code of Practice for International Students".

Information for Prospective Students
Maungaraki School is a medium sized primary school for children from ages 5 to 12, established in September, 1967. It is situated just a few minutes from the heart of Lower Hutt City. In April 1999 Maungaraki School opened on the Puketiro School site combining two local schools. Currently we have eleven classrooms and around 250 children. Children begin school at five years and leave at the end of their twelfth year to then attend a variety of secondary schools in the Lower Hutt area. Predominantly our children attend Hutt Valley High School.
All International Students are placed in a class according to their age. They get help and support from their class teacher as well as a specialist ESOL teacher. International Students in year levels lower than Year 7 will be accepted only if they are staying with immediate family members. Year 7 and 8 students may enrol if they are staying with a Designated Caregiver - this is a family relative or close family friend.
Please view this website for further information and photographs of the school in action. Full details related to International Students can be found in the International Student Handbook. This can be requested from the school office.
